How to run a silent yoga class
No technical skills needed, just a few choices made in advance. This guide follows the order in which decisions really come up: from the venue to the day after.
1. Start with the venue
The venue decides almost everything else. Outdoors, think about shade, ground and an easy meeting point; indoors, about how many mats really fit with room to move. If the space is public, like a park, a beach or a square, first ask whoever manages it whether you need a permit.
2. Count people, then add spares
You need one headphone per participant. Add a few for last-minute arrivals and for the one that will not switch on: the kit always includes spares, but if registrations stay open until the last moment it is better to have extra.
3. Decide how you will lead
If you teach from your mat, a fixed transmitter next to you may be enough. If you walk among students to adjust postures, use a portable transmitter in your pocket or on a belt, with a headset microphone.
4. Prepare the music
Create a dedicated playlist and download it to your phone, so you do not depend on a connection. Turn off notifications: in headphones any phone sound reaches everyone. If you use Bluetooth, pair the phone with the transmitter before students arrive.
5. Test the day before
Switch everything on, wear a headphone and speak as you would in class. Check the music level against your voice and the microphone position. Ten minutes of testing prevents the most common problems.
6. Welcome and hand out
Hand out the headphones at the entrance, already on and on the right channel. Explain in one sentence how to set the volume, then say a test hello and ask anyone who cannot hear you well to raise a hand.
7. After class
Collect the headphones, switch them off and wipe them if another group follows. Put them on charge in the evening: they will be ready the next day.
